There is no doubt in the world that dogs possess skills beyond our imagination. They have abilities and strengths that humans are just now being to understand and utilize.

In her book, What the Dog Knows: Scent, Science, and the Amazing Ways Dog Perceive the World, Cat Warren provides an extensive look into her journey of training her beloved dog, Solo, as a highly-skilled cadaver dog. It is through her passionate retelling that readers everywhere, including myself, will being the process of being to understand the true capabilities of man’s best friend.

From the moment Cat met Solo, she knew he was different than any other dog she had before. He was intelligent, curious, and had a knack for felling he knew what was best. Through on a nose of champions, and Solo had the makings of a unique dog. Cat knew she had a challenge on her hands to challenge Solo’s energy and brains into something that would fulfill both their needs for exploration.

Through the correspondence with many elite dog trainings, Cat and Solo began the long and extensive training of becoming a cadaver dog. It took years, but the two remained loyal and committed to becoming part of a small network of some of our police forces’ most valuable assets.

As readers follow along on Solo's journey, and eventual long and successful career as a cadaver dog, they will fall in love with the bond between this handler and incredibly special dog. On top of it, they will be overwhelmed and amazed at the commitment and training involved in preparing these dogs for the situations they may face on a search. I often found myself in fact overload as a tried to process all that the pair had to complete to earn their certifications to search.

What the Dog Knows is a beautifully-constructed text that not only was written as a tribute to the other's beloved dog. In addition to being a memoir, it is also a handbook of knowledge. The amount of research into the abilities and training options of dogs is mind-blowing. Cat Warren has become an expert in this subject in her journey to help Solo become the best cadaver dog he could become.

Solo’s career was met with several finds, and he retired after fulfilling many years in his role. Readers will be proud to learn all about the hero Solo was while they read his journey in the book, What the Dog Knows: Scent, Science, and the Amazing Ways Dog Perceive the World.
