Have you ever climbed mountains, rode camels, or went to tropical isles?
Miss Rumphius is a superb book for elementary kids. This book is all about kindness. It is being told from a little girl’s perspective but it is about the girl’s great-aunt, Alice. When Alice was little, her grandfather told her “You must do something to make the world a more beautiful place.”
When she grows up she travels the world and has adventures. She is a kind, adventurous, curious person. She climbs mountains, rides camels, and visits tropical isles. But when she’s riding a camel in the Land of the Lotus Eaters, she hurts her back. So, she settles down in a little cottage by the sea.
By the coming spring, her back is aching badly. She cannot walk or move around very well. She has to stay in bed almost the whole year.
Finally, next Spring, she is feeling much better and can move and walk again. Her favorite flower, lupines, are sprouted outside her house. But how? She did not plant them because she could not walk.
The wind! It blew the seeds and they grew! Suddenly, she has a grand idea. She knows how she will make the world a better place.
Read Miss Rumphius to find out how she leaves her mark. More people in the world need to make the world a more beautiful place. I wish there were more people like Miss Rumphius , Alice, in the world.
