Hedgehugs and the Caterpillar by Steve Wilson & Lucy Tapper

August 2, 2018

Horace and Hattie are two hedgehogs that are the best of friends. One day, they come across a strange bug. They don’t know it, but what they have found is a caterpillar.

Horace and Hattie discover that their new friend is very hungry. They help him find leaf after leaf to eat. One day, the caterpillar made a silky bed, and the two friends waited and waited for their bug companion to wake up.

Then, on a beautiful summer morning, their caterpillar friend is awake, but it no longer looks the same. Now, it is a beautiful bug with great big wings full of color and wonder.

Horace and Hattie decide they want to look like their friend. They decided to try eating and sleeping in hope that one day they can grow as beautiful as their new friend. Naturally, things don’t work out for them the way they hope it would.

As I was reading this book, I saw a ton of similarities between this book and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I know that many young readers would be able to compare and contrast the similarities and differences that they see between these two books.

If this book sounds interesting to you, you are in luck! Hedgehugs is actually an adorable series! Currently, there are four books in this series for you and your favorite young readers to enjoy.

Book 1: The HedgeHugs

Book 2: Hedgehugs and the Caterpillar

(Previously printed as Horace and the Hattiepillar)

Book 3: Hedgehugs Hopping Hot

Book 4: Hedgehugs Hide and Squeak
